The Sherlockian by Graham Moore
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

The problem is the book is that it is directionless. I read it (rather labored through it) and couldn’t understand the point of it all.

There are two timelines, which is a drag style in itself. One is in ACD times where he is after a serial killer and Bram Stoker helps ACD. This track is confusing and protracted.

The second one is contemporary where avid Sherlock fans known as Sherlockians gather and one of them is killed. A imbecile type fan Harold along with Sarah, a mysterious reporter is hunting for killer. ACD grandson Sebastian Conan Doyle ask Harold to find the diary, which was supposed to be with the victim, for a fee of course. Harold is least likable character. This whole track is a big bore and directionless.

The plot is weak and the diary is weakest McGuffin (an object or device in a film or a book which serves merely as a trigger for the plot) ever. What was the great mystery of diary and what was Harold, annoying as he is, upto? He finds it in the end and reads it. What was written in the diary? Graham Moore doesn’t tell us. Then Sarah threw the diary in a waterfall and the end.

It was boring and tedious.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a mixed bag like his Hindi book "Bakar Puran" which I liked in parts.

Some stories are good some bad and some plain boring.

I liked "That wasn't consent". It is a strong critique of leftist people in JNU type universities and journalistic and liberal circle. Anas Mahmood is a leach who abused Shalini. This talks of #metoo and sexual abuse. However I think the author is highly biased against the left people. In Bollywood, corporates and politics where sexual exploitations and favors are rampant, most sexual predators are capitalists. Still it was good story.

The last story "The process" was boring and prosaic and it was a long winded. I couldn't understand what Ajeet bhai was trying to say.

Some stories were set in villages and talked of caste exploitations. In these the view point of author seems contradictory. Sometime it appears he is against this caste exploitations and sometime he appears to defend it and favors the upper castes.

The orphan is a long story. This one is high on exposition and very low on story telling. This contradicts the principle of "Show not tell".

All in all it was mixed bag and decent one time read.

.....

UN-F**KING-PUTDOWNABLE

This is one of those fast-paced thrillers which you can't put down till you reach the last page. The story starts slowly and looks like just another tale of a meek husband who wants to have some fun on the sidelines.

But all hell breaks loose when the meek hubby Ken finds the girl dead after he had done his thing.. There are gangsters, dirty politicians and corrupt cops who want him framed for murder or dead. There starts a cat and mouse game which leaves in its trail countless dead bodies.

Thye pacing is fast and the pace is breathtaking. Everything takes place in one night and ends just before Mrs Ken returns.

Check out some passages:-

“It wasn’t as bad as that. You were recommended to me by a friend.” “He wasn’t much of a friend, Buster,” she said seriously. “My old man had a saying that applies to you. Whenever I wanted to do something risky, he would tell me to watch my step. ‘Be careful,” he would say, ‘you might be catching a tiger by its tail.’ I’ve never forgotten that saying. Don’t you forget it either, Buster. You’re going to forget all about me after tonight. If you get the wayward feeling again, don’t call me up. I won’t see you.” She took his hand and squeezed it. “I wouldn’t like you to get into trouble because of me.” Ken was touched. “You’re a funny girl: too good for this racket.” She shook her head. “I wish I was. It just happens, Buster, there’s something about you that’s made me soft tonight.” She laughed. “We’ll be letting our hair down in a moment and sobbing over each other. Well, here we are.”

......

“Maybe it’s not so ancient. Now look, Gilda, before I say anything more about Johnny, I want you to understand our position. I don’t have to tell you I’m crazy about you, and I’ll do anything for you. Always remember that. You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved. Oh, mere have been plenty of the other type, but with you, it’s different. You mean more to me than anything else in life. We are going to get married soon. As you know, I am in control of the administration of this City. It’s important to me that I should remain in control. Politics is a dirty game, kid. Everyone is on the lookout to cut someone’s throat. The quickest way to upset a political machine is to dig up a scandal that is big enough to hit the headlines. Then the voters take notice. Do you understand?” She sat on the arm of the chair, her hands clenched tightly between her thighs; still, white-faced and frightened. “Yes, Sean, but what has this to do with Johnny?” He faced her. “I told you Howard brought some bad news. Fay Carson was murdered last night.”

......

Louie beamed. Any other man would have been instantly suspicious, but Louie had an enormous opinion of his charms. He believed all women found him irresistible, and he accepted Gilda’s apparent surrender as his due. “You’re being smart, baby,” he said, got up and went over to her. “This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful friendship.” He caught hold of her, pulled her upright and made an attempt to kiss her. Gilda shoved him off with strength that startled him. “You’ll spoil my make-up!” she said sharply. “Keep away from me!” “Take it easy, baby,” he said, grinning at her. “None of those tricks tonight.” She gave him a long, steady stare. “Meet me at the stage door in an hour,” she said, crossed the room and opened the door. “I have to change.”

The advice of Mr. Bond is simple, like his writing. I agree with him when he says life resides in small, simple and little things like seeing the rainbow after rains, love, compassion and contentment.

The book is like a breath of fresh air and easy to read. The wisdom is timeless and eternal.

See some passages and admire the beauty:-

It occurs to me that perhaps the cat is a monk. By this I do not mean anything austere. I doubt anyone in single-minded pursuit of enlightenment ever finds it. A good monk would be a mild sort of fellow, a bit of a sensualist, capable of compassion for the world, but also for himself. He would know that it is all right not to climb every mountain. A good monk would know that contentment is easier to attain than happiness, and that it is enough.

.....

We must love someone. We must keep loving, all our days, Someone, anyone, anywhere Outside our selves; For even the sarus crane Will grieve over its lost companion, And the seal its mate. Somewhere in life There must be someone To take your hand And share the torrid day. Without the touch of love There is no life, and we must fade away.

......

I think I have learnt something of the value of stillness. I don’t fret so much; I laugh at myself more often; I don’t laugh at others. I live life at my own pace. Like a banyan tree. Is this wisdom, or is it just old age?

....

I am always a bit wary of saints and godmen, preachers and teachers, who are ready with solutions for all our problems. For one thing, they talk too much. When I was at school I mastered the art of sleeping (without appearing to sleep) through a long speech or lecture by the principal or visiting dignitary, and I must confess to doing the same today. The trick is to sleep with your eyes half closed; this gives the impression of concentrating very hard on what is being said, even though you might well be roaming happily in dreamland. In our imperfect world there is far too much talk and not enough thought. The TV channels are awash with gurus and experts telling us how to live, and they do so at great length. TV anchors are prone to lecturing and bullying the guests on their shows. Too many know-alls. A philosophy for living? You won’t find it on your TV sets or in discourses by the loud lieutenants of the gods. You will learn more from your paan-wala or a street vendor. ‘And what is your philosophy?’I asked my sabzi-wala. ‘You have asked me this before, sir,’he said, as he chose a bunch of fresh greens for me. ‘Yes, but what is your philosophy today?’‘The same as it was yesterday. Anything that helps me find a good customer.’‘My money will make you happy?’‘Only if my palak makes you happy and you come back for more,’he said and sent me on my way.
